| ✅ | Quick Answer China has dramatically different weather depending on which city your university is in. Northern campuses (Liaoning, Shandong, Hebei, Xinjiang) have cold winters down to −15°C — heavy winter clothing is essential and must be packed or bought in China. Southern campuses (Yunnan, Fujian, Sichuan, Guangxi, Zhejiang) have mild winters and hot summers. MTZ briefs every student on what to pack for their specific city at the pre-departure session. |
North vs South — The Two Climates Pakistani Students Face
The most important weather fact for Pakistani MBBS students: China is a vast country with completely different climates in different regions. Your university city determines your climate — and your packing list. Grouping MTZ’s 29 universities into climate zones:
| Climate Zone | Universities | Winter Temp | Summer Temp | Key Clothing Concern |
| Cold North | Dalian Medical (Liaoning), Jinzhou Medical (Liaoning), Shenyang Medical (Liaoning), Hebei North (Zhangjiakou), Shihezi (Xinjiang) | −5°C to −20°C | 25°C – 33°C | Heavy winter coat, thermal layers, snow boots — NON-NEGOTIABLE |
| Cool North / Central | Qingdao (Shandong), Jining Medical (Shandong), Shandong Second Medical (Weifang), Binzhou Medical (Yantai), Nanjing Medical (Jiangsu), Jiangsu University (Zhenjiang), Zhengzhou (Henan), Xinxiang Medical (Henan) | −3°C to +5°C | 28°C – 35°C | Proper winter coat and layers — cold but manageable |
| Mild / Moderate | Wenzhou Medical (Zhejiang), Ningbo (Zhejiang), Zhejiang Chinese Medical (Hangzhou), Xiamen (Fujian), Fujian Medical (Fuzhou), Jianghan (Wuhan), Wuhan UST, Yangtze (Jingzhou), Hubei Minzu (Enshi), Hubei Arts & Science (Xiangyang) | +2°C to +12°C | 30°C – 37°C | Medium winter jacket — warm layers sufficient |
| Warm South / Southwest | Kunming Medical (Yunnan), Southwest Medical (Luzhou, Sichuan), Gannan Medical (Ganzhou, Jiangxi), Yichun (Jiangxi), Jinggangshan (Ji’an), Youjiang Medical (Baise, Guangxi) | +5°C to +18°C | 28°C – 38°C | Light to medium jacket — spring/autumn equivalent to Pakistani winter |
| ⚠️ | Most Pakistani students underestimate the north Students from Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad consistently report being unprepared for their first winter at northern campuses — particularly Dalian, Jinzhou and Shenyang where temperatures regularly drop to −10°C to −15°C and below. A light jacket is not enough. A proper heavy winter coat (rated for below −10°C) is not optional — it is medical necessity. Hypothermia is a real risk for students who are not dressed appropriately. |
Season-by-Season Guide — What to Expect Each Season
China has four distinct seasons in most university cities. Here is what Pakistani students experience through the year:
| Season | Months | North China | South/Central China | What to Wear |
| Arrival (September) | Sep | Pleasant — 18°C to 25°C. Perfect weather. | Warm — 28°C to 33°C. Hot and humid. | Light clothing. Bring layers — evenings cool quickly in the north. |
| Autumn | Oct – Nov | Cooling fast. October 15°C, November 5°C. Leaves change dramatically. | Comfortable — 20°C to 28°C. Best season. | Medium jacket, light sweater. Begin layering from late October in north. |
| Winter | Dec – Feb | COLD. −5°C to −20°C. Snow is normal. Ice on roads. | Mild. +2°C to +12°C. Rain common. | NORTH: Heavy coat, thermal underlayers, gloves, scarf, hat, snow boots. SOUTH: Medium jacket, sweater layers. |
| Spring | Mar – May | Gradual warming. March still cold (−2°C to +8°C). May pleasant. | Warming — 18°C to 28°C. Can be rainy. | Transition layers. March still needs a coat in the north. |
| Summer | Jun – Aug | Hot and humid — 28°C to 35°C. University summer break overlaps. | Very hot — 30°C to 38°C. High humidity. | Light summer clothing. Cotton is key. Most students travel home for summer. |
The Complete Packing List — What to Bring from Pakistan
MTZ advises every student at the pre-departure briefing on their specific city. Here is the comprehensive master packing list — filtered by your climate zone:
Clothing — Northern Campus Students (Dalian, Jinzhou, Shenyang, Shihezi, Hebei North, Qingdao, Nanjing)

| Formal trousers / jeans | 4–5 pairs | For classes and hospital. |
| White coat (for clinical years) | 2 | Can buy in China. Most universities sell on campus. |
| Warm gloves | 2 pairs | One regular, one waterproof for snow days. |
| Woollen scarf | 2 | Essential — exposed neck is extremely cold in northern winters. |
| Woollen hat / beanie | 2 | Critical for ear protection in −10°C and below. |

| Regular shoes / trainers | 2 pairs | For class and daily campus use. |
| Sandals / chappals | 1 pair | For hostel room and summer. |
| Socks (warm) | 10+ pairs | Thermal socks for winter. Regular for other seasons. |

Clothing — Southern / Mild Campus Students (Kunming, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Sichuan, Guangxi)
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
| Medium winter jacket | 1 | A Pakistani winter jacket is usually sufficient for southern campuses. |
| Warm sweaters | 2–3 | For evening layering in winter months. |

Essential Non-Clothing Items to Pack from Pakistan
These are the items students consistently wish they had brought — or are glad they did:
Documents and Finance
- Original passport + 5 colour copies — keep originals and copies in separate bags
- Admission letter + JW202 form — originals
- FSc and Matric certificates (attested copies) — needed for university registration
- Pakistani Rupees converted to CNY cash — carry enough for first 2 weeks before bank account opens (CNY 2,000–3,000 minimum)
- International debit/credit card — Visa/Mastercard for emergency use before WeChat Pay is set up
Technology
- Power strip with Type C sockets + Pakistani Type G adaptor — Chinese sockets are Type A/I. A power strip with adaptors lets you charge all Pakistani devices.
- VPN installed on phone and laptop before departure — CRITICAL. Cannot install easily after arrival as VPN websites are blocked in China.
- Unlocked mobile phone — to accept a Chinese SIM card on arrival
- Laptop — essential for medical studies. Bring from Pakistan — same quality, lower price.
- Portable power bank — for long hospital rotation days
Medical and Health
- Personal medications (3-month supply) — Pakistani brands may not be available in China
- Basic first aid kit — paracetamol, antacids, antihistamine, bandages
- Hepatitis B vaccination record — required for medical fitness certificate; carry the original
- Medical fitness certificate (original) — issued pre-departure, needed at registration
Food and Kitchen
- Key Pakistani spices (cumin, coriander, chilli, garam masala, haldi) — pack 3–6 months supply. Buy more from Pakistani community shops once settled.
- Dry packaged Pakistani foods — instant daal mixes, biryani masala, achaar — comfort food for first few weeks
- Electric kettle (small) — for tea, instant noodles, cup soups. Many hostels provide but not all.
Personal and Cultural
- Prayer mat + compass — bring from Pakistan. Also available in China but familiar ones from home matter.
- Quran and religious books — digital versions work with VPN; physical copies are irreplaceable
- Pakistani SIM card on roaming — for the first 48 hours before getting a Chinese SIM
Photos of family — sounds small, matters enormously in the first weeks of homesickness
What NOT to Bring — Save Luggage Space
| Item | Why Not to Bring |
| Heavy furniture or large appliances | Hostels are furnished. Large items add weight and are cheaper in China. |
| Full winter wardrobe (for northern students) | Chinese winter clothing is excellent quality and significantly cheaper than Pakistani imported options. Buy your heavy coat in China — save the luggage space. |
| Large quantities of Pakistani cooking oil / ghee | Liquid restrictions in luggage. Halal cooking oils available near all campuses. |
| Fresh food (meat, fruit, vegetables) | Not permitted through Chinese customs. Confiscated at the border. |
| University-issued items | White coats, stethoscopes, textbooks — typically sold on campus or recommended by university. Wait and buy in China. |
| Excessive cash in PKR | Pakistani Rupees are not easily exchanged in China. Convert to CNY or USD before departure, or bring a Visa/Mastercard for ATM withdrawal. |
Frequently Asked Questions — Weather and Packing
Q: How cold does it get at northern campuses like Dalian and Shenyang?
Dalian regularly reaches −10°C to −15°C in January and February. Shenyang can drop to −20°C in harsh winters. These are genuinely cold temperatures — Pakistani students from Lahore and Karachi find them shocking initially. A heavy winter coat rated for below −10°C, thermal underlayers, gloves, scarf and a hat are non-negotiable at these campuses.
Q: Can I buy winter clothes in China?
Yes — and MTZ recommends it. Chinese winter clothing is excellent quality and very affordable. A proper heavy down coat costs CNY 200–600 (PKR 8,000–24,000) at local shops. Brands like Uniqlo (available across China) offer excellent thermal underlayers. It is better to arrive in September with light luggage and buy your heavy winter wardrobe locally — saved luggage weight and better-fitted clothing for the climate.
Q: Is the weather at southern campuses like Kunming and Xiamen manageable?
Yes — Kunming in particular has famously pleasant weather year-round, earning it the nickname ‘Spring City’ (春城). Winters are mild (5°C–15°C). Xiamen and Fuzhou are coastal and mild. A Pakistani-style winter jacket is usually sufficient at these southern campuses. Students from these cities often find the climate easier to adjust to than northern Pakistan itself.
Q: What should I wear to clinical rotations at the hospital?
Formal clothing under a white coat is standard for hospital clinical rotations. Male students typically wear formal trousers and a collared shirt under their white coat. Female students wear formal modest clothing under their white coat — this is perfectly compatible with hijab and Pakistani modest dress. White coats are either provided by the university or available for purchase on campus.
Q: Does it snow in China?
In northern university cities (Dalian, Jinzhou, Shenyang, Zhangjiakou, Shihezi) — yes, significantly. Snow from November through February is normal. Campus roads are cleared but can be icy. Snow boots or waterproof boots with grip are essential at northern campuses. In central cities (Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Wuhan) light snow is occasional. Southern cities (Kunming, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guangxi) rarely if ever see snow.
Q: Is the summer heat manageable?
Most students are on summer break (June–August) — so the hottest months coincide with the vacation period when students typically return to Pakistan. For those who stay on campus during summer, all hostels have air conditioning. Central and southern campuses experience high humidity in summer — more uncomfortable than Islamabad but manageable with air conditioning and light cotton clothing.
