6 Reasons Pakistani Families Choose Shihezi University

MTZ places Pakistani students at both MOE-listed and Non-MOE-listed Chinese universities, and the right choice depends on your child’s licensing goals and your family’s budget. The six reasons below are for families who have decided that an MOE-listed English-medium MBBS is the right fit. Each reason names what Shihezi University delivers against the risk of choosing the wrong MOE-listed peer.

1

Not Every MOE-Listed University Has Held Its Listing Long Enough to Be a Safe International-Licensing Choice

If your child is studying MBBS in China to keep international licensing pathways open (USMLE, ECFMG, PLAB, UKMLA, AMC, MCCQE), the strength of the MOE listing matters. A university recently added to the MOE list carries less history than one that has held the listing for two decades. Shihezi University has delivered English-medium MBBS under MOE approval since 2002, which is 23 years of continuous listing, and holds Position No. 28 of 45 on the current MOE 2026-2027 list. Your child’s international licensing pathway rests on this length of standing.

2

Some MOE-Listed Universities Send Students Out to Rented Clinical Bases Instead of Their Own Tertiary Hospital

Clinical exposure in Years 3 to 6 shapes the doctor your child becomes. The risk among MOE-listed peers is variable hospital quality, with some universities relying on external clinical arrangements rather than directly affiliated tertiary hospitals. Shihezi University’s First Affiliated Hospital is a Grade III Class A tertiary hospital with 1,500 beds and 57 clinical departments, the largest hospital in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps system. Its Clinical Medicine discipline entered the ESI Global Top 1% in 2019. Your child rotates through real wards in this hospital from Year 3 onwards.

3

Within the MOE Segment, Tuition Varies by Up to CNY 20,000 Per Year for the Same Recognition Status

Among the 45 MOE-listed universities, annual tuition ranges from CNY 30,000 to CNY 50,000. Premium-tier MOE-listed universities such as Wenzhou Medical, Nanjing Medical, and Qingdao charge CNY 33,000 to CNY 50,000 in annual tuition. Shihezi University charges CNY 30,000, which is the lowest tuition point on the current MOE 45-university list. Over a 6-year MBBS, the gap compounds to a difference of PKR 7 lakh to PKR 24 lakh in tuition alone. Your family gets the full MOE-listed recognition status at the most affordable point on the MOE list.

4

Not Every Chinese Province Provides Halal Food and Friday Prayer as a Default of the Location

If halal food access, Friday Jumu’ah prayer access, and Ramadan provisions are non-negotiable for your family, the province your child studies in matters. Many MOE-listed universities sit in provinces with limited Muslim infrastructure, which means halal food becomes a daily search rather than a default. Shihezi sits in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a province with a substantial Muslim population including the Uyghur and Hui communities. Halal food is widely available on campus and across the city, and the Shihezi School of Medicine has hosted Muslim international students continuously since 2002.

5

A New MOE-Listed Destination Without an Established Pakistani Community Puts Your Child’s First Year at Risk

The first semester of MBBS abroad is the highest-risk period for student withdrawal. Some MOE-listed universities have small or new Pakistani cohorts, which means your child arrives without a senior-student network. Shihezi University currently has more than 250 Pakistani students enrolled, including more than 120 female students, spread across multiple year groups. The Pakistani Student Association at Shihezi has been continuously active for over a decade and organises Eid gatherings, new-student airport pickup at Urumqi, and senior-student mentorship. Your child has a Pakistani support network from Day 1.

6

Several MOE-Listed Universities Now Require the CSCA Entrance Examination, Adding a Time, Money, and Failure-Risk Cost

A growing number of MOE-listed Chinese universities require the CSCA entrance examination as a mandatory admission material. Wenzhou Medical University lists CSCA as Application Material 4 in its 2026 admissions brochure as a representative example. CSCA preparation typically requires three to six months of focused study, a sitting fee, and travel to a CSCA testing centre. Missing the last practical sitting before the application deadline means missing the September intake entirely. Shihezi University does not require any entrance examination for MBBS admission, as confirmed verbatim on the official Shihezi admission page at shzuni.com/admission-process/. Your child applies on the strength of FSc marks and a brief online English interview, with no CSCA bottleneck.

Can Your Child Apply for MBBS at Shihezi University?

Shihezi University sets its own entry requirements, and PMDC sets additional conditions for Pakistani students. Both apply. The table below covers the Shihezi-specific requirements, and you must confirm PMDC’s current MDCAT requirement at pmdc.pk before applying.

Academic Requirements (Shihezi-Specific)

Physical and Medicments

Shihezi University requires all incoming international students to complete a medical fitness examination after arrival in Shihezi. The examination covers a general physical check, blood tests, chest X-ray, and vision and hearing assessment. The examination is conducted on the Shihezi campus through the university admission office, which schedules the appointment and accompanies the student to the healthcare centre. The university’s published medical examination charge is between 360 and 400 CNY, payable on arrival. Conditions that may affect admission status include severe infectious diseases, untreated mental health conditions, and any condition the examining physician determines incompatible with the 6-year MBBS programme. The examination is not conducted in Pakistan beforehand and not a barrier at the application stage.

What MTZ Verifies Before Submitting Your Application

MTZ checks five items before any Shihezi University application is submitted. First, PMDC recognition status verified at pmdc.pk on the day of submission, not from memory or a previous check. Second, FSc transcripts covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology attested by IBCC. Third, valid MDCAT score meeting the current PMDC notification. Fourth, passport validity of at least 18 months beyond the Shihezi enrolment date of September 2026. Fifth, age within the Shihezi 15 to 25 year limit at enrolment. No Shihezi application is submitted without all five passing.

How MTZ Applies Pakistani Students to Shihezi University

The steps below cover the Shihezi University application only. For the full general MBBS application process for China, see our complete guide at /mbbs-in-china/.

Step 1

Eligibility Confirmation (Week 1)

WhatsApp MTZ Islamabad or Lahore with your child’s FSc transcripts and MDCAT result. MTZ confirms Shihezi University eligibility, checks PMDC status at pmdc.pk on the day, and verifies age against the Shihezi 15 to 25 year limit at enrolment. This step is free.

Step 2

Document Preparation (Weeks 1 to 3)

Shihezi University’s required documents per the official admission page: application form, fee acknowledgment form, FSc transcripts attested by IBCC, FSc graduation certificate, valid Pakistani passport with at least 1 year validity, MDCAT result, colour photograph on white background (35mm x 45mm), proof of medium-of-instruction certificate in English, police character certificate, psychological assessment, foreigner physical examination form, bank statement for the Chinese Embassy with USD 5,000 to 7,000 indicative funds. MTZ provides the complete checklist with attestation instructions.

Step 3

WMU Online Application Submission

MTZ submits the application through Shihezi University’s online application portal at shzuni.com/apply-online/ on your behalf with all documents uploaded in one complete package. The application fee of CNY 1,000 (approximately USD 145) is paid at this stage to register your child in Shihezi University’s School of Medicine.

Step4

Pre-Admission Letter (Approximately 7 Working Days)

Shihezi University’s international admission office reviews the submitted documents. If qualified, the office issues a pre-admission letter within 7 working days. MTZ monitors the application portal and informs you the same day the letter is issued.

Step 5

Online English Interview

Shihezi University conducts a brief online interview to evaluate the student’s English proficiency and personality, per the official admission process. This is not a competitive academic test. MTZ briefs your child on the interview format before the interview is scheduled.

Step 6

Formal Admission Letter and JW202 Form (After MOE China Approval)

Shihezi University is MOE-listed. A JW202 form is therefore required for your child’s X1 Student Visa application. After the interview is cleared and MOE China approves the placement, Shihezi University issues the Formal Admission Notice and the JW202 visa letter. MTZ receives both documents directly and couriers them to your home address in Pakistan.

Step 7

X1 Student Visa Application

With the Admission Letter and JW202 in hand, MTZ prepares your child’s X1 Student Visa application for the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad. MTZ accompanies the CVASC submission. The X1 visa is the dedicated visa category for international students studying in China for longer than 180 days. See /china-student-visa/ for the full visa checklist.

Step 8

Pre-Departure Briefing and Arrival

MTZ conducts a pre-departure session covering what to pack for Shihezi’s continental climate, halal food access on the Shihezi campus and across the city, Shihezi campus layout, bank account setup at the Bank of China branch on campus, VPN installation before departure from Pakistan, and first-week support contacts. The Shihezi admission office collects your child from Urumqi Diwopu International Airport. Your child arrives in September, completes the on-campus medical examination at the university healthcare centre, pays the tuition and hostel fees in RMB or USD on arrival, collects the student ID, and is assigned to the international dormitory.

Where Can Your Child Practise After MBBS from Shihezi University?

Shihezi University’s MOE-listed status and WFME accreditation open licensing pathways across multiple countries. The three most relevant for Pakistani families are covered below. For the full country-by-country comparison across all 29 MTZ universities, see /mbbs-china-licensing/.

MOE-Listed Status

Shihezi University is listed by the Ministry of Education of China as an approved institution for English-medium MBBS delivery to international students. Shihezi has held this listing since 2002, which is 23 years of continuous MOE-approved English-medium delivery. Shihezi’s MOE-listed status is the foundational requirement for USMLE Step 1 eligibility and ECFMG application, supports PLAB and UKMLA applications for graduates targeting the UK, and underpins AMC eligibility for the Australia pathway. Verify Shihezi University’s MOE listing at the official Shihezi page shzuni.com/moe-listed-universities/ (new tab).

PMDC Recognition and NLE Pathway (Pakistan)

Shihezi University is on the PMDC recognised foreign institutions list under the entry ‘Shihezi University School of Medicine, MBBS’. After completing the 6-year MBBS programme, Pakistani graduates must pass the NLE (National Licensing Examination) administered by PMDC to register and practise medicine in Pakistan. The NLE is mandatory for all Pakistani graduates of foreign medical universities regardless of country of study. MTZ re-verifies Shihezi University’s PMDC recognition status before placing every student. Always confirm the current PMDC list at pmdc.pk (new tab) before making any application decision.

ECFMG logo featuring a circular emblem next to the text 'ECFMG'

ECFMG Eligibility (USA Pathway)

Shihezi University’s WFME accreditation and MOE-listed status support ECFMG eligibility for graduates who sit the USMLE licensing examination sequence (Step 1 followed by Step 2 CK). Shihezi graduates may apply to ECFMG on completion of the degree. The ECFMG pathway also opens the doors for residency applications in the United States after the licensing exams are cleared. Verify current ECFMG eligibility through the World Directory of Medical Schools at search.wdoms.org (new tab) and at the ECFMG / Intealth source at faimer.org (new tab). For a full country-by-country licensing comparison across all 29 MTZ universities, see /mbbs-china-licensing/.

MOE Listed vs Non-MOE Listed Universities: Which Suits You?

The 29 PMDC-approved Chinese medical universities where MTZ places Pakistani students split into two categories. Understanding the difference is the single most important decision a Pakistani family makes after committing to MBBS in China.

NMC India and BMDC Bangladesh apply to those countries’ students only. Pakistani students are unaffected by NMC and BMDC. PMDC recognises both MOE-listed and Non-MOE-listed Chinese universities on MTZ’s portfolio, and your child’s Pakistani licensing pathway works through PMDC and the NLE in either category.

Hostel and Accommodation at Shihezi University

Your child will live on campus for most or all of the 6-year degree. Here is exactly what the Shihezi University international dormitory provides so there are no surprises on arrival.

Dalian Medical University international student hostel room, twin-share accommodation

Life as a Pakistani Student at Shihezi University

Shihezi is a planned garden city in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, smaller and quieter than China’s mega-cities, with a substantial Muslim population that makes Pakistani student adjustment easier than in non-Muslim-majority Chinese cities. Pakistani students already at Shihezi University describe the city as one of the more comfortable Chinese student destinations for Muslim international students.

Pakistani Students Association (PSA)

Active PSA on campus, continuously running for over a decade. Organises Eid gatherings, Pakistan Independence Day celebrations, cricket and football activities, new-student orientation, and Urumqi airport pickup for September arrivals.

Pakistani student community

More than 250 Pakistani students currently enrolled at Shihezi University, including more than 120 female students, spread across multiple year groups. Pakistani students already at Shihezi consistently describe the community as close-knit. MTZ connects new students with senior Pakistani students before arrival.

Airport pickup

MTZ arranges a named senior Pakistani student or Shihezi admission office representative to meet new arrivals at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC). Shihezi is approximately 150 km west of Urumqi by road. No solo navigation on Day 1.

City character

Shihezi is the second-largest city in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) administrative system. The city is planned, clean, and known as the ‘Garden City of the Gobi’ for its tree-lined streets in an otherwise arid region. Local Uyghur and Hui Muslim communities make halal food and mosque access part of the city’s everyday infrastructure.

Climate

Cold semi-arid (Köppen BSk). Winters very cold: January average -15.3°C with overnight lows down to -20°C, heating runs in dormitories. Summers hot: July average 25.3°C with highs to 34°C. Annual precipitation 286 mm, low humidity year-round. Pakistani students bring thermal clothing for the winter; MTZ provides the packing list at pre-departure.

Transport

DiDi (Chinese ride-hailing app) is widely used by students within Shihezi city. City bus routes serve the Shihezi University campus. Inter-city rail and bus connect Shihezi to Urumqi in approximately 2 hours. Urumqi Diwopu International Airport has direct flights to Islamabad and Lahore taking approximately 2.5 hours.

Weekend activities

City parks, the Shihezi Cotton Production Museum, the Bingtuan Military Reclamation Museum, Tianshan mountain day trips in summer, indoor sports facilities and gym on the Shihezi campus, halal restaurant outings, PSA-organised group dinners and cricket matches.

Communication with family

VPN must be installed before departure from Pakistan to access WhatsApp, YouTube, Google services, and Pakistani news apps. With VPN active, family video calls work normally from the dormitory room. MTZ provides the VPN setup briefing at pre-departure.

Safety for Female Pakistani Students at Shihezi University

Parents asking this question deserve a straight answer, not reassurance. Here is what Shihezi University’s arrangements actually are.

Female-only accommodation

Female students housed on separate floors or in a female-only block of the international student dormitory. Not mixed with male students.

Female warden

Female staff member responsible for the female hostel block. First point of contact for any hostel concern at any hour. MTZ provides the female warden contact to parents before the daughter’s arrival.

Separate entrance

The female block has its own entrance. Male students and male visitors cannot enter the female accommodation area.

Male visitor restriction

Male visitors, including family members, meet female students in designated common areas only, not inside the female hostel.

CCTV

CCTV coverage at all dormitory entrances including female blocks. 24-hour campus security personnel on the Shihezi campus.

Card-access entry

Hostel entry by student card only. Unregistered visitors cannot enter the building.

MTZ pre-enrolment support

MTZ shares hostel photographs and confirms female accommodation details before any commitment is made. The parent receives the female warden contact and a named senior Pakistani female student contact at Shihezi before their daughter’s arrival.

Parent contact line

MTZ Islamabad (+92 315 155 5507) and MTZ Lahore (+92 328 900 2222) remain the parent’s direct contact throughout the full 6 years, not just during the application period.

Halal Food at Shihezi University, What Your Child Will Actually Eat

This is one of the first questions Pakistani parents ask. The answer for Shihezi is straightforward, because Xinjiang is one of the most Muslim-friendly regions in China and halal food is part of the everyday food infrastructure. Here is what is available on the Shihezi campus and across the city.

Campus Muslim canteen (Qingzhen)

Dedicated halal dining section on the Shihezi University campus canteen, serving rice dishes, noodles, lamb, chicken, and beef with halal preparation. Daily meal cost approximately CNY 20 to 35 (PKR 800 to 1,400 at 1 CNY = PKR 40).

Halal restaurants in the city

Shihezi has a substantial established Uyghur and Hui Muslim community. Halal-certified restaurants are common across the city, including Uyghur cuisine (laghman, polo, kebabs, naan) and Hui Chinese-Muslim cuisine. Accessible within walking distance or short DiDi ride from the campus.

Nearest mosque

Shihezi has functioning mosques for Friday Jumu’ah prayer. MTZ provides the nearest mosque address to the Shihezi University campus at the pre-departure briefing.

Prayer room on campus

Availability of dedicated prayer space on the Shihezi campus is confirmed with MTZ before arrival. Pakistani student groups and the PSA coordinate Friday prayer arrangements during the academic week.

Supermarket halal products

Major supermarkets and small grocers near the Shihezi University campus stock halal-certified (Qingzhen-labelled) packaged foods, lamb, chicken, and beef. Xinjiang’s Muslim demographic means halal labelling is widely available, not a niche category.

Ramadan provisions

The campus Muslim canteen and Uyghur restaurants in Shihezi adjust serving hours during Ramadan to provide sehri and iftar meals. The communal kitchen in the international dormitory is available for home cooking. The PSA organises communal iftar gatherings at the dormitory or at Pakistani student homes. Shihezi University’s international office is informed of Ramadan dates annually and accommodates academic timetable adjustments where needed.

Refund Policy and Risk Flags: Read Before You Pay

Every family needs to understand what is refundable and what is not before any payment is made to Shihezi University or to MTZ.

Application fee (CNY 1,000)

Per Shihezi University’s official refund policy at shzuni.com/admission-process/ verbatim: ‘The application cost will be fully reimbursed’ if the student’s application is rejected by Shihezi University. MTZ also confirms this in writing before the application fee is paid.

Tuition fee (CNY 30,000 per year)

Tuition is paid annually on arrival at Shihezi University. Non-refundable for students who withdraw mid-year for personal reasons. Partial refunds may apply only in very early withdrawal in Year 1 at Shihezi University’s discretion. Confirm with MTZ in writing before any payment.

Hostel deposit and fee (CNY 5,000 per year)

Paid on arrival to Shihezi University. Twin-share dormitory standard. Refund on proper checkout at year-end is at the university’s discretion. Non-refundable if the student leaves without following Shihezi University’s exit procedure.

X1 visa rejection

If rejection is due to MTZ file preparation error, MTZ resubmits the X1 visa application at no extra charge. If rejection is due to applicant-side issues (incomplete documents, family financial proof issues, applicant interview performance), resubmission is at applicant cost.

MTZ service fee

Confirmed in writing to the family before any payment is made to MTZ. No surprise charges. MTZ is SECP-registered and the service fee structure is disclosed at the eligibility-check stage, before the family commits to MTZ.

Risk flags — read these before applying:

Age Limit at Enrolment

Shihezi University’s official age limit for the bachelor’s MBBS programme is 15 to 25 years at the time of enrolment, per shzuni.com eligibility criteria verified live 24 May 2026. A Pakistani applicant who turns 26 before September 2026 enrolment does not qualify under Shihezi’s published age policy. Confirm your child’s age against the September 2026 enrolment date with MTZ before submitting any document or fee.

Application Deadline

30 June 2026 is Shihezi University’s published deadline for September 2026 intake, per shzuni.com/admission-process/. MTZ advises beginning the application process no later than April 2026 for September 2026 entry to allow time for IBCC attestation, MDCAT result waiting, document preparation, X1 visa processing at the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad, and CVASC submission. Late starts increase the risk of missing the visa window before September enrolment.

Document Quality

Shihezi University requires clean colour-scanned documents. Mobile phone photographs of certificates are rejected at the application-review stage. Use a proper flatbed scanner for FSc transcripts, FSc graduation certificate, passport copy, MDCAT result, and the medium-of-instruction certificate. Documents with visible shadows, bent corners, low resolution, or partial scans cause immediate rejection of the application file and a delay of 2 to 4 weeks while re-scanning and re-submission happens.

PMDC List Changes

PMDC recognition lists at pmdc.pk are updated periodically without advance notice. MTZ re-verifies the PMDC list status for Shihezi University before placing every student. Do not apply based on a recognition check done months earlier without re-verification. The official PMDC list at pmdc.pk/Documents/Others/Listz.pdf is the authoritative source, and the entry ‘CHINA, Shihezi University School of Medicine, MBBS’ must be confirmed live before any submission.

Scholarships for MBBS Students at Shihezi University

Read this section carefully before any agent tells you a scholarship is guaranteed. MTZ’s position on scholarships is stated below in full, and it does not change based on what you want to hear.

Some partner universities offer merit-based awards to high-performing MBBS students from their second year, based on academic performance — these are the university’s independent decisions and are not guaranteed at admission. MTZ Global Visa Consultants does not assure or guarantee scholarships for MBBS study in China. For fully funded MS and PhD scholarships, see our Global Scholarships hub.

What MTZ Will Not Promise for Shihezi University

CEO Mubbashir Qureshi brings 25+ years of personal experience to every application MTZ handles. We have seen what happens when consultants overpromise. Here is our position, in writing.

MTZ will not promise:

Admission decisions belong to Shihezi University.
MTZ prepares a strong, complete application file. The decision to issue a pre-admission letter, the JW202 form, and the formal admission notice belongs to Shihezi University’s international admission office and to MOE China, not to MTZ.
Fee increases at Shihezi University and CNY-PKR exchange rate movements are outside MTZ’s control.
CNY 30,000 is the current published tuition. Shihezi University may revise its published fees in future intakes. PKR costs also move with the CNY-PKR exchange rate. Neither is in MTZ’s hands.
Academic performance during the 6 years belongs to your child.
MTZ provides guidance throughout the degree. No consultant can guarantee Year 1 pass rates, Year 3 clinical performance, Year 6 internship outcomes, or post-graduation NLE results.
No Shihezi scholarship is guaranteed at admission.
Shihezi University awards merit-based scholarships from Year 2 onwards at the university’s independent discretion. The scholarship section above states MTZ’s full position. It does not change.
PMDC recognition lists change without notice.
MTZ re-verifies Shihezi University’s PMDC status before every placement. PMDC policy decisions are outside MTZ’s control entirely.
Visa timelines depend on the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad and CVASC.
MTZ prepares a complete, accurate X1 visa file and accompanies the CVASC submission. Processing time is set by the embassy, not by MTZ.
Clinical placement quality is Shihezi University’s operational responsibility.
MTZ verifies that Shihezi’s 4 affiliated hospitals include the Grade III Class A First Affiliated Hospital. What happens inside the daily ward rotation belongs to Shihezi University’s School of Medicine.

MTZ commits to:

PMDC recognition status for Shihezi University is verified at pmdc.pk before every student placement, not from memory, not from last month’s check.
A full written fee breakdown in CNY and indicative PKR reaches your family before any payment is requested. No payment is made without written confirmation from MTZ.
MTZ remains reachable on WhatsApp Islamabad and Lahore for all 6 years of your child’s degree, not just during the application period.
If the X1 visa rejection was due to an MTZ file preparation error, resubmission is at no extra charge. If rejection is due to applicant-side issues, MTZ advises on the path forward at applicant cost.

Shihezi University: Campus and City

Where your child studies shapes the full 6-year experience. Here is exactly what the Shihezi University campus and the city of Shihezi look like on the ground.

The Campus

Shihezi University’s main campus sits in Shihezi city, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, at the International Admission Office on Beisi Lu, postal code 832003. The campus spans 180.2 hectares (approximately 445 acres) and houses 11 academic schools across agriculture, medicine, engineering, economics, management, literature, sciences, education, law, and history. The School of Medicine, founded in 1949 as Shihezi Medical College and merged into Shihezi University in 1996, operates within this main campus and houses the MBBS programme along with basic medical sciences, nursing, preventive medicine, oral medicine, laboratory medicine, medical imaging, anaesthesiology, and pathology departments.
The Shihezi campus includes a library holding 3 million books and periodicals, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, athletics halls, standard stadiums, comprehensive teaching buildings, and a centrally heated international student dormitory that Pakistani students live in for the full 6-year degree. The university currently enrols approximately 41,000 undergraduates and 6,482 postgraduates, with more than 600 international students from 40+ countries including more than 250 Pakistani students. Shihezi University holds Project 211 status, Double First-Class Construction status, and ranks 138th nationally in the Best Chinese Universities Ranking, second only to Xinjiang University within Xinjiang Province.
From Year 3 onwards, clinical rotations move to Shihezi University’s affiliated hospitals, primarily the First Affiliated Hospital, which is located within the same Shihezi city and accessible from the campus by short bus ride or DiDi. Your child does not leave Shihezi for clinical rotations during the MBBS years.

The City: Shihezi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region

Shihezi (Chinese: 石河子) is a planned garden city in northern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, with a population of approximately 380,000. The city sits 150 km west of Urumqi, the regional capital, in the foothills of the Tianshan mountain range. Shihezi is the administrative centre of the 8th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC, 兵团) and is known as the ‘Garden City of the Gobi’ for its tree-lined streets and parks in an otherwise arid region. The city has twice been recognised for its living standards in national assessments.
The climate is cold semi-arid (Köppen BSk). Winters are very cold: January averages -15.3°C with overnight lows down to -20°C. The dormitories and university buildings run central heating throughout the winter months. Summers are hot and dry: July averages 25.3°C with daytime highs up to 34°C. Annual precipitation is 286 mm, low across the year. Pakistani students pack thermal clothing and proper winter outerwear for the winter; MTZ provides the full pre-departure packing list before flight.
Local Uyghur and Hui Muslim communities make halal food and mosque infrastructure part of the city’s everyday fabric, which is a real advantage for Pakistani Muslim families. DiDi (Chinese ride-hailing) is widely used by students within the city. City bus routes serve the Shihezi University campus directly. Inter-city rail and bus connect Shihezi to Urumqi in approximately 2 hours. Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC) provides direct flights to Islamabad and Lahore via airlines including China Southern and Pakistan International Airlines, with journey times of approximately 2.5 hours each way. Pakistani families flying to visit during the degree, or for graduation, reach Shihezi within a single travel day from Islamabad or Lahore.

Both categories are PMDC-recognised, and both qualify Pakistani graduates for the PMDC NLE and for Pakistan and Gulf practice. Shihezi University is MOE-listed since 2002.
